Diabetes Education for the Primary Care Provider VIEW DETAILS
In this lecture, Dr. Larry Fox reviews current information on diagnosis and treatment of pediatric diabetes. According to the CDC, the percentage of U.S. children and adolescents with a chronic health condition has increased from 1.8% in the 1960’s, to over 7% by 2004, and even higher presently. Diabetes is one of the chronic conditions on the rise. This is a multifactorial problem, but obesity and overweight in children are major contributors. Children who are overweight become adults who are overweight, with all the accompanying morbidities.  Dr. Fox discusses the major types of diabetes; having either type 1 or type 2 diabietes causes an increased risk of long term complications. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, nontraumatic lower extremity amputations, and new cases of blindness each year among adults age 20-74. Poor diabetes management in childhood contributes to more serious complications in adulthood. He discusses new treatment methods that are used and also under development.
